Masal vadai is one of the famous snacks/ street food in South India. As the name suggest, it is a blend of lentils, spices and veggies. Masal vadai’s are crispy outside and soft inside.

INGREDIENTS

Channa dal – 1 cup
Onion – 1
Dry red chilli – 1
Green chilli – 1
Garlic – 3 cloves
Fennel seeds- 1 tsp
Mint
Curry leaves
Coriander leaves
Salt to taste
Oil

PROCEDURE

STEP 1: Soak channa dal 3-4 hrs and grind with red chilli coarsely without adding water.

 

STEP 2: Grind fennel seeds, green chilli and garlic with little water and add to the mix.

 

STEP 3: Add mint, curry leaves, coriander leaves, onions, salt and mix everything.

 

STEP 4: Heat oil in a pan for deep-frying, take a lemon size mix and gently flatten it with your hands and slowly drop in the oil. Flip to the other side and fry until vadas are golden brown.

NOTES

  1. If the mix is watery, add rice flour to thicken it.
  2. You can add chopped spinach, banana flower and other veggies to the mix to make it a healthy option for kids.
  3. Adding garlic and fennel seeds will enhance the flavor.
  4. Grind channa dal coarsely, not to smooth paste.
