Meen puttu is one of the popular dish in Tamil Nadu. Sura meen(shark fish) puttu is the healthy recipe for all the lactating mothers. “My grandma” often do with shark fish, but I have replaced with salmon fish.

Here we steam the fish, remove all the skin and bones. Shred the fish using fork or hands and sear the fish with spices to enhance the flavor.



Salmon fish (steamed) -2 fillet
Onion – 1
Ginger – 1/2 inch
Garlic – 5 cloves
Green chillies – 2
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Coriander leaves
Fennel seed – 1/2 tsp
Fennel powder – 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
Sesame oil(Gingelly oil)
Salt to taste


Step 1: Heat oil in a pan, add fennel seed, fennel powder, minced garlic and ginger and saute for 2 mins.



Step 2: Add onions and saute until translucent, then add green chillies, turmeric, salt and saute for a minute. Finally, add steamed fish and saute roughly.

Step 3: Garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves.




  1. Remove skin and bones after you steam the fish.
  2. You can try this recipe with shark,salmon,tilapia etc.(boneless fish are preferred)
  3. Make sure to chop the onions,garlic and ginger finely.
